Larsen Farms Inc. was started in 1978, but the farm itself was broke out of
sagebrush in the early 60's by Earl and Nelda Larsen and their 3 kids. Like
most farms in the Columbia Basin, farming was done after the day job was
finished with long hours and long weekends while Earl sold farm equipment
to try to make ends meet. Alfalfa hay was the stable crop and potato crops
soon followed. 1985 was the first year of asparagus for Larsen Farms with
their first planting of 160 acres of the Mary Washington variety.
Things have changed on Larsen Farms, alfalfa and potatoes are no longer
raised, but acreage for asparagus has increased to 325 acres of all male
varieties. Earl and Nelda are no longer with the farm, but son's Bart and
Gary continue on the same excellent farming practices instilled by the
teachings of Earl and Nelda. Just in case you are wondering where your next
pound of asparagus may come from, grandson Tanner is all coached up and
learning all about those long hours and long weekends from the early 60's.
